DIY: Let’s Go Fly A Kite!

With summertime in full swing playtime in the sun is all that has been on my mind.

Kite flying is one of my most favorite things to do, so I thought it would be fun to make my own! This is a fun little project that can be enjoyed on a particularly breezy day (or in my case, a day of spins & twirls when there is no wind.)

Supplies Needed:

  • 2 small dowels
  • Fabric (I used vintage sheets!)
  • Electrical tape
  • No Sew Glue
  • Ribbon
  • Kite String

  1. Cut dowels down to 23″ by 30″
  2. Place the dowels in a cross shape & secure with electrical tape
  3. Loosely cut fabric out in a diamond shape around the dowels.
  4. Paint, write & decorate fabric as you please
  5. Place fabric over dowels & use no sew glue to secure ends while pulling the fabric taut
  6. Cut a small hole at each corner of the kite. Attach kite string width wise & length wise, joining in the middle.
  7. Attach flying string to the rest of the joining string.
  8. Attach (with electrical tape) ribbon to the bottom corner of the kite for the tail & add bows in desired places.

Up, up & away! You’re ready to fly your own one of a kind adorable kite!

Happy Flying!

Xoxo’s!

      • I remember flying kites when I was about 13 and tying together multiple spools of kite string until the kite was so high you couldn’t see it. Not sure why, but I thought that was so cool. Still do.

      • It was! We were out there for hours holding this string. The adults in the neighborhood came home from work and would come over to see what was going on. They had a hard time believing that there was a kite up there somewhere. The string just disappeared into the sky.

Eventually, the string broke. Never did recover the kite, but then it wasn’t as pretty a kite as the one you made.
